Our Programs

One student
One trained volunteer
One powerful connection

How It Works

ONE TO ONE provides free children’s literacy programs that connect elementary school students with trained literacy tutors to develop their literacy skills in an environment where they can make mistakes, learn and grow.

Our programming is aimed at the grey-area students – those who do not receive any other resource support directly from schools (i.e. no designated learning issues) but have not achieved reading skills consummate to their grade levels.

In the past year, ONE TO ONE has developed virtual programs by piloting both in-school and after-school virtual reading programs in the last school year, and offered a new program specifically for parents. We continue to work closely with parents, caregivers and teachers to ensure our programs provide the most benefit for our young readers. Our virtual programs are especially important for emerging young readers in a time of instability in their education.

In-person School Tutoring Programs

ONE TO ONE began its one-on-one literacy tutoring program in 1989, and pre-pandemic, served almost 3,000 students in 211 schools across B.C.

We have temporarily suspended our in-school programs due to the current provincial health regulations surrounding COVID-19. ONE TO ONE plans to resume in-person tutoring programs in January 2022, provided it is safe to do so.

Please subscribe to our newsletter and follow our social media channels for the most current updates on our in-school programs.

Virtual School Tutoring Programs

ONE TO ONE currently serves 20 schools with virtual reading programs that connects one student with a trained volunteer literacy tutor once a week for a virtual reading session. We piloted 8-week cohorts in select schools in the 2020-2021 school year and look to continue this program in a limited capacity in the 2021-2022 school year.

Virtual After-school Tutoring Programs

In 2021, ONE TO ONE piloted a new way to connect readers and tutors, accessed virtually from the student’s homeYoung readers enrolled in this program engage directly with a trained volunteer literacy tutor for a one-on-one after-school virtual reading session once a week. These weekly sessions help elementary-aged students develop their reading skills, self-confidence and social skills.

Come Read with Me (for parents)

ONE TO ONE offers free facilitated virtual workshops and talks to equip parents and caregivers with the tools they need to help their young emerging readers succeed. In 2021, we offered 8 workshops led by ONE TO ONE educators that covered topics such as how to inspire your child to read and how to encourage children to read for enjoyment. Keep an eye out on our website and social media channels for future Come Read with Me sessions.
