VIRTUAL SPELLING BEE 2020

Registration is closed.

The pandemic has been hard on everyone, and placed incredible strain on struggling young readers. That’s why ONE TO ONE has been piloting ways to adapt our literacy tutoring program to be delivered virtually starting this fall.

Join us in raising $25,000 — critical funds needed to complete our program transformation. With your help, and those attending our Spelling Bee on September 24, our volunteer tutors can reconnect with vulnerable young readers across BC and combat the impact of COVID-19 on their literacy skills.

100% of the funds raised will go towards the program’s virtual transformation.

Program

How will the funds raised from the Spelling Bee be used?

For 30 years, ONE TO ONE has paired young readers struggling with reading with caring, trained literacy tutors. The result? Kids who blossom into confident readers.

COVID-19 was the first time we have had to press pause on our program. And yet, the need for children’s literacy support is greater than ever

Starting this fall, we are relaunching our program to be connect tutors and students virtually. That means re-training our tutors, purchasing new equipment and software, and accessing new online books and literacy toolsThe funds raised from this event are crucial to ensure the thousands of young readers who take part in ONE TO ONE have the chance to catch up to their peers academically. We will share more about our return-to-school plan at this year’s Spelling Bee.

We’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $25,000 through this event, and every dollar counts. So, whether you contribute $50 or $500 you are making a tremendous difference, and helping us help young readers across British Columbia.

What if I don’t know our team name yetCan I still register?

Game Play

How will the Spelling Bee competition work?

Players will compete in teams of 4 participants. Competing teams will be invited to Zoom, where quizmaster extraordinaire Dr. Jonathan Berkowitz will lead us through three increasingly difficult rounds of competition

Players will submit their answers through the TriviaHub portal.

How will our team’s points be tracked?

An exciting feature of a virtual Spelling Bee is a live leaderboard powered by TriviaHub. The leaderboard will be updated every round.

How many spelling rounds are there?

There will be three rounds of game play, with multiple spelling challenges in each round.

Team members will work together, but submit their answers individually through an online answer sheet. The team scores will be shown on the leaderboard after each round.

Will I be spelling on my own, or with my team?

Each round of play will have two types of spelling challenges: one where players will identify the correct spelling of a word, and another where teams will be sent to breakout rooms to perfect the s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g of the words spoken by our quizmaster.

Remember, for both challenges each team member needs to submit their answer on the online answer sheet before the clock runs outAll team members correct responses will be tallied for a final team score on the leaderboard.

Who is TriviaHub? Is this ONE TO ONE’s first virtual event?

The virtual Bee might be our first virtual event, but that isn’t the case for our host TriviaHub. This is a popular platform for hosting fun Trivia nights for organizations all around the world.
