For the first time ever, tutors in the North Okanagan-Shuswap were treated to a “kick-off” social – and it was a hit. On October 3rd, both new and returning volunteer tutors came together to meet other like-minded folks, share their experiences in ONE TO ONE reading program, and hear about plans for the upcoming year.

Tutors also got the opportunity to brush up on some literacy games and strategies in advance of their first day reading with students in schools.

The well-attended social was held at the Prestige Harbourfront Resort – with a lovely view of Shuswap Lake – and tutors enjoyed some delicious refreshments while taking in the sights.

Nearly 40 tutors came together for the social, joining the staff and board of the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS). It was a unique opportunity for LASS staff and board to share their gratitude with the group for making ONE TO ONE such a successful program. Everyone was excited to spend the morning visiting with their peers from around the district and playing a few friendly Boxcars and One-Eyed Jacks games.

You’ll recall: the Box Cars kits were introduced last year, and new tutors learned about them in their training sessions this summer and fall. It was a great opportunity to make sure that all tutors, new and old, felt comfortable with the materials. Several tutors shared that they found it helpful to have a relaxed environment in which to practice these games and hone their skills before starting tutoring.
Overall, the event was very well received – so much so that LASS intends to make this event an annual one.

It was a great way to get into the groove before the start of tutoring!
